October 16, 2025

7:00pm Free Lecture - Concert Hall Theater, Amarillo College

with guest speaker VICTORIA WYETH

The Amarillo Museum of Art invites you to join us for the annual Ladd Lecture on Thursday, October 16, 2025. This free and popular event is made possible by the generosity of Peggy Ladd and her late husband Frank A. Ladd. The Ladd Lecture is an ongoing series of lectures by distinguished experts from across the United States with a focus toward a greater understanding and enjoyment of the visual arts.

Andrew Wyeth (1917—2009) is one of the most celebrated and beloved American artists of the 20th century.  Christina’s World, a tempera painting completed in 1948, is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art and is likely his most famous work.  Wyeth primarily painted the landscapes and interior views of rural Pennsylvania and Maine using either watercolor or tempera.  In 1963, Andrew Wyeth became the first painter to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which was conferred by President John F. Kennedy. In 1977, he became the first American artist since John Singer Sargent elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts. He was also the first living American artist to be elected to Britain's Royal Academy. Wyeth received the Congressional Gold Medal in 1988, the highest civilian honor bestowed by the United States Congress, as well as the National Medal of Arts in 2007.

Victoria Browning Wyeth is a prominent speaker, writer, and teacher on the multi-generational Wyeth creative legacy. She is the only grandchild of the artist Andrew Wyeth and, through her extensive interviews with him and his models, has unique insight into his work.  Victoria’s lecture will examine the most famous works by Andrew and discuss subject matter, context, technique, and of course, fun family stories behind the paintings.
